Recently, Apple Computer asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reserve a part of the radio spectrum so that one day computer users could communicate with each other without being connected to a wired network. Apple's petition would permit ALL computer manufacturers to take advantage of wireless networks.
Apple's petition paves the way for the establishment of a new class of data communications, called Data Personal Communications Services (Data-PCS). If Apple's petition is approved, personal computer users in the future will be able to communicate with other users and computer peripherals within a building or a campus via radio waves. This innovation would eliminate the need for local communications to travel on wired networks.
Radio spectrum is a scarce resource in high demand. The FCC makes its decision based on input from the public. Therefore, it is crucial that computer users who see value in wireless computer communications let the FCC know their views immediately. The FCC has set a deadline of Wednesday, April 10 for public comments regarding Apple's petition. We urge you to write to the FCC by April 10 so that your voice in this important decision is heard.
